Sleep
Plenty of it! Especially first night. Students don’t recognize fatigue in themselves and need plenty of persuasion to go to sleep. I suggest that the staff make frequent checks in the first hour after lights out and insist on absolute quiet. Children are more likely to fall asleep if they are kept quiet and still, out of boredom if nothing else.
Free Time
None. Relaxation time can be active or passive, but should be organised and supervised. A sport competition within camp is a good way to keep everyone involved. Quiet times should involve reading, diary writing etc. Staff should be rostered to supervise these activities with the other staff having some 'student free time' to recharge their batteries.
Dormitory Competitions
Running a dormitory competition has the effect of maintaining good standards of hygiene and cleanliness, as well as developing personal pride and health habits, securing good discipline within the dormitories and reducing the workload involved in the end of camp clean-up. Daily dorm inspections are a necessity, with the Camp School Staff available to assist.
Pocket Money
No pocket money is worth considering unless a town shopping visit is included in your itinerary. Some groups provide pocket money in their camp fees which enables all of the students to have an equal amount throughout the camp.
Commitment
By allowing students and the other staff/volunteers to shoulder some responsibility for camp, and therefore responsibility for the camp’s success or failure, they will show more commitment. If you do all the objective setting, preparation and planning, odds are that you will be the most and perhaps the only committed person on camp.
Wet Weather Alternatives
Though there is rarely a need...you never know and best to be prepared!
Don't do it all yourself - share the workload.
Evening Program
The evening program is an ideal opportunity to foster group unity and for the students to participate in fun activities not normally available. Below is a list of activities that may be worth considering:
- Ice breaker games
- Folk dancing
- Bootscooting (GCS staff)
- Aerobics
- Quiz night
- Fashion parade
- Charades
- Tabloid sports (GCS has the equipment and score sheets)
- Concert
- Drama activities
- Lantern stalks
