The Western Australian Government provides insurance for the Department of Education and Training(DET), including schools and camp schools, through a managed fund called ''RISKCOVER'', which is administered by SGIC.
The Worker's Compensation and Rehabilitation Act 1981, provides statutory benefits to the Department of Education and Training, plus indemnity for legal liability, under common law, arising from personal injury to workers of the Department under contract of service.
Indemnity is given for physical loss of, or damage to property owned by employees and used in connection with their employment. So long as it is not otherwise insured. Money and jewellery are excluded.
So long as appropriate approval for camp is obtained, personal accident cover applies to voluntary workers, work experience and students attending camp. Compensation for medical expenses is limited to $10,000 per student. Compensation is also available for death, home tutorial expenses and funeral expenses.
Teachers
Teachers are automatically covered on official business by workers' compensation if injured and by public liability if someone is injured because of teacher negligence. There is no cover for damage or loss of personal property.
Voluntary Workers
Voluntary workers who, with the approval of the Principal assists with educational activities are covered as above for teachers.
Students
Students are automatically covered for personal accident by the Department of Education and Training's RISKCOVER insurance policy, provided the camp has been officially approved by the school principal.
