LEARNING AREAS - MATHEMATICS

STRAND 3, 4 & 5: WORKING MATHEMATICALLY

Students use mathematical thinking processes and skills in interpreting and dealing with mathematical and non-mathematical situations. In particular - problem solving techniques, select required ideas and tools to fit practical situations and investigate and reason about patterns in number, space and data.

 Possible activities:
  • Pre camp planning - costing, measuring distances, fundraising, fuel economy.
  • Orienteering
  • Setting tables for meals
  • Duty rosters   
  • Problem solving activities
  • Expedition route planning
 

STRAND 6, 7 & 8:  NUMBER

Students use numbers and operations and the relationships between them efficiently and flexibly.

 Possible activities:
  • Pre camp planning
  • costing
  • budgeting
  • fuel economy
  • Shopping
 

STRAND 9, 10 & 11: MEASUREMENT
Students use direct and indirect measurement and estimation skills to describe, compare, plan and construct.

 Possible activities:
  • Measuring distances Orienteering
  • Problem solving activities
  • Expedition route planning
 

STRAND 15 & 16: SPACE  

Students describe and analyse mathematically the spatial features of objects, environments and movements.

 Possible activities:
  • Dormitories – confined space 
  • Orienteering & mapping
  • Problem solving activities
  • Sketching, painting, sculpture  to scale
